A man who survived the Las Vegas shooting and helped bring victims to hospital has been killed in a hit-and-run incident.
Roy McClellan had weeks earlier escaped Stephen Paddock’s barrage of gunfire which left 59 people dead at the Route 91 Harvest music festival, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.
The 52-year-old was hitchhiking along a motorway in southern Nevada, around 50 miles west of Las Vegas, when he was struck by a vehicle in the early hours of 17 November. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His widow, Denise, said her husband was suffering from depression and had been undergoing therapy since the shooting, adding: “It was really messing with his head.”
She said: “I’m angry. I’m angry. I feel that he was under the influence of something or drunk and didn’t want to get caught, so he bailed and left my husband laying there in the street. He doesn’t deserve that.
“This isn’t what I wanted for him. I don’t understand why he wasn’t taken at the shooting, but a month later he was taken this way.
“I hope my husband found peace and he’s safe now.”
The Nevada Highway Patrol said the victim was illegally walking in the right lane of the motorway when he was hit by a vehicle and are investigating the incident. Police are searching for the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro.
