A doctor who had lost his job at a New York City hospital opened fire with an assault rifle inside the building on Friday, killing another physician and injuring several others before taking his own life, according to police sources.
Emergency-medical technician Robert Maldonado said he and his partner had locked themselves in a room with doctors and nurses when they heard someone yell for medics.
When they ran out, they found a doctor shot in the stomach, the station said.
“He was in a lot of pain obviously. We carried him nine floors. The police department helped carry, I helped put pressure on the wound, the entrance and exit wound and the police department they all just grabbed his legs, grabbed his arms,” Maldonado said.
The gunman, Dr. Henry Bello, fatally shot himself after trying to set himself on fire at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. He staggered, bleeding, into a hallway where he collapsed and died with the rifle at his side, officials said.
Five of the injured are hospital staff members. The sixth person injured was a patient at the hospital.
The hospital said that the five staff members have had initial surgeries and will likely need additional surgeries in the coming days.
A patient who was also shot was in stable condition.
